Low-Profile Negative Coupled Inductor for AI Chip Vertical Power Delivery Voltage Regulator

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has led to increasing electricity consumption in data centers, necessitating improved power delivery efficiency. Vertical power delivery, placing the voltage regulator modules (VRMs) on the processor's backside, is gaining attention due to its lower conduction losses compared to lateral power delivery. This study focuses on reducing inductor height while increasing current density. It explores the relationship between inductance, core footprint, and flux structures using vertical flux designs with ferrite materials to optimize the inductor magnetic field. This paper proposes a height of 2.2mm and a peak current density of 1.9A/mm². The prepared negative coupling inductor is expected to achieve a current handling capability of up to 110 A.
