Preliminary Design and Local Component Sourcing of Electric Vehicle Cooling System

In order to ensure the sustainability of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Indonesia, local industry ecosystem and supply chain needs to be developed. Referring to existing automotive industry, inventarization of local manufacturers that are potentially able to produce EV components to support the production of EV locally needs to be carried out. As a case study, in this work, an effort to provide sourcing of EV cooling system is reported. It is started by developing a preliminary design of EV cooling system, with the objective of ensuring the optimum Lithium-Ion battery operating temperature between 15 °C and 35 °C, and EV drive train components, as well as cabin temperature. The conceptual design uses an indirect liquid cooling, with the determination of cooling system components technical specification. Based on the identified components, sourcing of the local manufacturers is carried out with the analysis of the potential of production. Key components with potential for Indonesian manufacturing include radiators, condensers, evaporators, chillers, compressors, pumps, valves, and expansion valves.
