Simplified Model of Type IV Wind Turbine for Real-Time Digital Simulations

In this paper, a simplified model of a Type IV wind turbine for real-time digital simulations is presented. Real-time emulation systems have technological limitations related to memory size, number of standard processing cores, and other characteristics, depending on the manufacturer. Depending on the specific application to be tested, such as low-voltage ride-through, active/reactive power support, and power quality, the size of the system under study can be strongly limited by the level of detail of the corresponding models to be simulated in real-time. The proposed model provides a good trade-off between accuracy and computational burden for low-voltage ride-through capability tests, voltage fluctuations, and harmonic distortion studies. This was proven through three case studies of a Type IV high-power wind turbine for offshore wind farms.
