Analytical Expressions for Calculating the Characteristics of Ultra-Short Pulse Protection Devices Based on a Reflection-Symmetric Structure

The paper considers devices for protection of electronic systems against interfering ultra-short pulses (USP) based on the use of the modal decomposition effect in a strip reflection symmetric structure with inhomogeneous dielectric filling. Analytical expressions for calculating the time responses of reflection symmetric modal filters and meander lines are formulated. Based on these expressions, formulas have been derived that enable rapid estimation of the key device characteristics – the amplitudes and time delays of the decomposition pulses, as well as the attenuation coefficient of the USP relative to half the electromotive force. To verify the proposed approach, the analytical calculations are compared with the results of quasi-static and electrodynamic simulation. A high coincidence of the results is obtained, which confirms the accuracy of the analytical model. It is shown that the proposed expressions allow to estimate with high accuracy the characteristics of protective devices without the need for resource-consuming numerical simulation.
