Approach to Simulation Modeling of Secure Self-organizing Decentralized Wireless Sensor Networks

Due to the development of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and their distribution in various practical fields, there is a need for greater dynamism and variability of such networks. As a result, there is currently a raising tendency to increase self-organization and decentralization of such networks. Networks become more customizable to the needs of specific consumers and adaptive, depending on operating conditions of nodes and the environment. WSN nodes can change their geographic location and network topology, depending on the current channel throughput and reliability, as well as perform various service and application functions. However, such WSNs form new information security threats directly related to the malicious exploitation of the properties of self-organization and decentralization. As a result, a potential attacker is able to carry out sensor data modification attacks, flooding impacts, energy depletion attacks, breaking the routing processes, etc. with greater variability and potentially higher efficiency. This paper is focused on modeling and analysis of this type of attacks, while the core emphasis is placed on the study of simulation modeling of such networks, taking into account the influence of self-organization and decentralization of both the networks themselves and the attacks that exploit these properties. The paper proposes an approach to simulation modeling of self-organizing wireless sensor networks with role-based control. The experiment conducted on a model of a WSN fragment for a system of interconnected unmanned aerial vehicles confirmed the correctness of the approach and its feasibility in practice.
