Multi-Physics Simulation of Alkaline Water Electrolyzer Based on An Electro-thermal-chemical Coupled 3D Zero-gap Model

The study of electro-thermal-chemical coupling within alkaline water electrolyzers is of significant importance for improving electrolysis efficiency. This paper analyzes the internal mass and heat transfer processes, designs and constructs a three-dimensional zero-gap multi-physics model, and validates its reliability through experimental data. Using the model, the uniformity of current density, gas volume fraction, and temperature distribution under different loads is analyzed, and the correlation among these parameters under varying loads is investigated. Additionally, the influence of local flow rate on electrolysis efficiency is explored, providing insights for determining optimal flow rate boundaries and improving the design of the electrolyte chamber. The proposed model offers a foundation for studying characteristic parameters within AWE systems, contributing to enhanced electrolysis efficiency, the identification of control parameter boundaries, and improved operational safety.
