A Robust Miniaturized Multi-Chip Module with Wireless Data and Power Transfer for Precise and Safe Tinnitus Therapy

A miniaturized multi-chip module (MCM), designed for safe and efficient electrical stimulation of the inner ear, is proposed to treat tinnitus. The system features advanced circuit designs, including a novel charge-balance mechanism, that enables precise, customizable current waveforms alongside wireless power and data transfer (WPDT). To meet the stringent size requirements for implantation in the ear, the system was fabricated using the TSMC 180 nm BCD technology and incorporates small-form-factor coils, each with a radius of 2.5 mm. This compact design ensures reliability, minimal invasiveness, and compatibility with the anatomy of the inner ear. Performance testing using both biological and circuit load models under various conditions validates the WPDT effectiveness, highlighting its potential as an innovative solution for tinnitus therapy.
