High Speed and Low Power 8-Bit 12-Function ALU Using Transmission Gate Logic in 90nm Technology

In contemporary digital systems, the Arithmetic Logic Unit is a critical component for optimizing both performance and power efficiency. This paper introduces a novel, miniaturized 8-bit ALU with 12 functions, implemented using Transmission Gate logic in 90 nm CMOS technology. The design incorporates addition/subtraction, shift operations, multiplication, increment/decrement, parity checking, comparison, binary to gray conversion, and 2's complement. Implemented in Cadence Virtuoso using the gpdk 90 nm library, the ALU achieves a low propagation delay of 0.172 ns and power consumption of 102 mW, yielding a power-delay product of $1.7544 \times 10^{-11} ~\mathrm{J}$. Compared to traditional CMOS implementations, our TG-based architecture reduces transistor count by 47.3% and offers improved speed and energy efficiency. Its architecture, governed by a 3-bit control mechanism, provides both flexibility and adaptability, making it suitable for applications requiring high performance as well as those prioritizing minimal energy usage.
