Pt/Au-Embedded MoS2/rGO Sensor for Highly Sensitive Ammonia Detection at Room Temperature

Exposure to large concentrations of ammonia (NH3) in the surrounding air can result in Prompt burning of the nose, throat, swelling in the bronchioles and alveoli, along with damage to the airways, which can result in severe breathing difficulties or respiratory failure. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are extensively employed in gas sensing applications. Whereas, they are characterized by limitations such as poor selectivity, elevated operating temperature requirements, and considerable power consumption. This study presents an NH3 gas sensor operating under ambient conditions, synthesized using MoS2/rGO composite material. Using COMSOL Multiphysics, we model, simulate, and analyze a Pt/Au incorporated MoS2-rGO gas sensor. The Pt-MoS2/rGO and Au-MoS2/rGO exhibited an enhanced sensitivity to NH3 about 0.22292 ppm⁻¹ and 0.15901 ppm⁻¹, respectively. The superior sensing performance results from the expanded surface area of MoS2-rGO, which provides numerous adsorption sites for NH3. molecules, combined with the catalytic action of Pt/Au that reduces the activation energy. This study can help to identify the best design and sensing materials for optimal gas sensor performance and predict their behavior before the fabrication begins.
