Flexible Communication Payload for Switchable Broadcast & Broadband Services in India

With the changing market demands, there is a need for dynamic allocation of satellite resources among diverse services. This paves way for flexible communication payload, to enable resource allocation as per demand, even after satellite is launch. In India, DTH (Direct-To-home) is very popular, but OTT (over-the-top) platforms are slowly replacing conventional modes of entertainment, especially in urban area. Hence, having flexibility to switch between broadcast and broadband services will prove to be beneficial for service providers. However, conventional satellites are optimized based on type of service, either broadcast or broadband. To ensure flexibility, a re-configurable payload is required to switch between broadcast and broadband service. This paper presents a communication payload architecture for flexibility of switching between broadband and broadcast services using conventional payload elements and RF switching. This architecture enables sharing of satellite resources in terms of spectrum and power.
