A Science Mapping Review of Energy Storage Systems Enabling Resilient Grid Stability in the Renewable Era

In the face of rising renewable energy integration and the growing urgency for power system resilience, energy storage systems (ESS) have emerged as pivotal enablers of grid stability. This study presents a comprehensive science mapping and bibliometric review of global research on ESS and their role in enhancing grid resilience from 2010 to 2024. Drawing data from both Scopus and Web of Science, and employing advanced bibliometric tools such as ScientoPy and VOSviewer, this analysis examines 3,571 curated publications to identify evolving research trends, influential technologies, collaborative networks, and thematic clusters. The results reveal a significant surge in scholarly output, particularly post-2019, reflecting heightened interest in lithium-ion batteries, smart grid integration, and power system reliability. Simultaneously, emerging research themes such as flow batteries, hybrid storage architectures, and AI-enhanced grid management signal a paradigm shift toward intelligent, flexible, and distributed energy infrastructures. Geographic and institutional analysis identifies China and the United States as global leaders, with Aalborg University and Tsinghua University driving high- impact contributions. Despite notable advancements, the field continues to face challenges in scalability, lifecycle efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and seamless grid integration. These gaps have fueled increased attention to machine learning applications, novel materials, and hybrid storage configurations. By synthesizing 15 years of research activity, this study offers a strategic roadmap for advancing ESS technologies that are resilient, adaptable, and aligned with the demands of a sustainable and decentralized energy future.
