AI-Enabled SAP Enterprise Systems: A Comprehensive Business Use Case Survey

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems represents a critical transformation in modern business operations, yet comprehensive analysis of AI implementation across SAP’s enterprise ecosystem remains fragmented. This paper presents a systematic survey of AI use cases and implementation frameworks within SAP business applications, examining the current state of AI-enabled process optimization across enterprise domains. Our methodology encompasses a structured analysis of SAP’s Business AI portfolio, evaluating AI capabilities across three primary business domains: Finance, Supply Chain, and Customer Experience. We examine the technical architecture of SAP’s AI foundation, including the Joule copilot framework, SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) integration, and the company’s responsible AI governance structure. Key findings reveal 25+ specific AI use cases spanning from machine learning-driven demand forecasting to generative AI-powered content creation, with particular emphasis on process automation in tax compliance, visual inspection, and intelligent sales execution. The analysis identifies SAP’s multi-layered AI approach incorporating foundation models, large language models, and domain-specific algorithms integrated through a unified platform architecture. These findings demonstrate significant implications for enterprise digital transformation strategies, highlighting the evolution from traditional ERP systems to AI-native business platforms that enhance decision-making capabilities and operational efficiency across critical business processes.
