Improving Performance of CCPS Based on the Permanent Magnet Excited HIA by Using Passive Compensation Winding

The capacitor charging power supply (CCPS) based on a permanent magnet excited (PME) homopolar inductor alternator (HIA) offers several advantages over its electrically excited (EE) counterpart. Specifically, the PME HIA boasts higher efficiency and eliminates the issue of transient flux attenuation. However, the d-axis transient inductance of the PME HIA is larger than that of the EE HIA. As a result, when the charge time is short compared to the time constant of the HIA, the charge power of the PME HIA may be lower than that of the EE HIA. To address this challenge, this article proposes the use of a passive compensation winding (PCW) for the PME HIA. A simplified model for the CCPS based on the PME HIA with PCW is developed, and analytical calculation formulas for the inductance of the PME HIA with PCW are derived. The performance of the CCPS based on the PME HIA with PCW is compared with that of the PME HIA without PCW and the EE HIA using the simplified model. Simulation results indicate that the PCW effectively overcomes the shortcomings of the PME HIA without PCW compared to the EE HIA in short charge time scenarios. To achieve high charge efficiency and fast charge speed, the resistance of the PCW should be minimized. The efficiency difference between the PME HIA with PCW and the PME HIA without PCW is negligible. The PME HIA with PCW is suitable for both short and long charge time scenarios, whereas the PME HIA without PCW and the EE HIA have certain limitations. Finally, the simplified model and the calculation formulas for the inductance of the PME HIA with PCW are verified through FEM simulations.
