Charging Station Localization for Battery Electric Trucks Along Trans-European Transport Network in Italy

We present an integrated methodology for the localization of en-route and overnight charging stations for battery electric trucks (BETs) used in long haul operations. Starting from traffic flows data, our approach leverages existing infrastructure in terms of parking sites and considers TransEuropean Transport Network (TEN-T) and high voltage grid distances. We identified a total of 533 candidate locations that could be potentially used to deploy charging stations. Moreover, to align with European Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), as a selection criterion to filter our final set of locations, only the ones closest to the TEN-T core network were selected. This filtering process resulted in a set of 264 locations, the majority of which (257) in the radius $(<15 \text{km})$ of an already existing infrastructure. For the locations not covered by existing infrastructures, we propose as a result a buffer area of 15 km radius to enable future optimization of site selection.
