Why the World Needs a Dedicated Journal on Electrical Safety Engineering

The growing complexity and pervasive deployment of electrical systems, in industrial, commercial, and residential environments, have elevated the importance of specialized research in electrical safety engineering. Despite existing safety journals and general electricalengineering publications, no dedicated outlet systematically addresses the intersection of hazard analysis, protective design, human factors and technical standards compliance. This paper first defines the scope of electrical safety engineering, emphasizing risk-informed approaches over simple regulatory compliance. It then reviews emerging trends, such as smart monitoring, AI-driven analytics, remote inspection technologies, and renewable energy systems, and highlights persistent challenges in arc-flash mitigation, battery storage safety, and human-factors integration. A comprehensive analysis of over a dozen safety-science and electricalengineering journals confirms a gap in sustained, peer-reviewed coverage of papers dedicated to electrical safety. To fill this gap, we propose a journal on Electrical Safety Engineering, outline its scope and content areas, and present operational strategies for editorial governance, rigorous doubleblind peer review, and open-access dissemination. By providing a focused, multidisciplinary forum, this novel journal would advance the research, practice, and policy of electrical safety engineering worldwide.
