Parameter Requirements Analysis of Space-Based VHF Communication System

The very high frequency (VHF) air-ground communication service is the predominant means of communication between pilots and controllers. However, its range is limited by terrestrial radio horizon. Space-based VHF communication, which uses VHF frequencies via satellite, is a promising solution for aircraft in remote regions and oceanic areas. WRC-23 provides the regulatory framework for this concept. This research aims to analyze the main factors affecting the space-based VHF communication link, to analyze the parameter requirements of various satellite orbital altitudes, and to estimate whether satellites at those orbital altitudes could meet the requirements for space-based VHF communication.
