Developing a Composite Dynamic Load Model for the Colombian Power System

The Colombian power system has been experiencing fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) derived from the load response after disturbances, which cannot be accurately represented by conventional static load models that have been used in the Colombian electrical model until now. Consequently, the commonly used static load model is no longer sufficient, necessitating a transition to a model that better represents this characteristic and, overall, better reflects the load performance of the Colombian system. This implementation represents a significant effort for the Colombian power system, especially considering the lack of regulation to report the information necessary to adjust the load model. To address this, a roadmap was defined to improve the Colombian load model which includes adopting the WECC (Western Electricity Coordinating Council) composite load model structure, determining the Colombian load characterization, and parameterizing the load model by analyzing load composition and metaheuristic optimization to provide the final load model tuning. The results show a significant improvement in positive-sequence phasor-domain simulations when comparing the response of the old static model with the optimized composite load model. The latter model accurately exhibits the FIDVR phenomena, allowing for better anticipation of voltage issues in the Colombian power system. Additionally, the results demonstrate that the joint application of sensitivity analysis and metaheuristic algorithms is a promising alternative for WECC load model parameterization.
