Digitalisation Framework for Industrial Energy Management

Quick developments in the energy sector cause industrial companies to monitor energy devices more effectively in their production processes. Currently, there is a lack of a systematic approach to developing a structured digitalisation roadmap for companies. To address this gap, extensive research was conducted to establish a strong theoretical foundation, identify key challenges, technological enablers, and best practices in industrial energy management. As a result, this paper presents a structured framework covering all key stages of industrial energy digitalisation—from project scoping and energy element classification to sensor selection and visualisation strategies. The framework was validated through the interviews with experts working in energy management departments within the Austrian industry. The framework is intended to serve as a guideline for future digitalisation initiatives. Furthermore, the paper highlights the role of emerging technologies, such as AI-driven methods, in enhancing decision-making and efficiency in industrial energy management.
