Experimental Verification of the Correlation Between Continuous Wave (CW) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Irradiation Methodologies

As a supplementary approach to electromagnetic pulse (EMP) irradiation testing, the continuous wave (CW) irradiation test platform is commonly employed in preliminary assessments for large-scale or electromagnetic vulnerable equipment under test (EUT) due to its portability, mobility, and non-destructive low-field characteristics, enabling estimation of the EUT's electromagnetic pulse response. To validate the correlation between CW irradiation and EMP irradiation methodologies, this paper establishes a theoretical basis for their correlation. Utilizing an airborne display device and its interconnecting cables as the EUT, comparative CW and EMP irradiation tests were conducted, the EMP response was estimated from CW irradiation results and compared with measured EMP response values, a maximum response peak amplitude deviation of approximately 4 dB was observed, demonstrating a statistically correlation between the two methodologies.
