Joint Beamforming for Distributed Massive MIMO System in Indoor Scenario

In 5G era, wireless communication systems are designed to provide higher capacity to accommodate the growing traffic demands from both subscriber users and vertical industries, particularly in indoor scenarios. The distributed antenna system (DAS) is recognized as an effective approach to enhance system capacity across indoor environments. However, practical network deployments have revealed that co-channel interference (CCI) caused by DAS configurations utilizing RF combiners adversely affects user experience, particularly in terms of mean cell throughput and cell-edge throughput. To mitigate co-channel interference effectively, a joint beamforming-based scheme can be implemented within distributed Massive MIMO systems for indoor deployments. This paper presents a detailed numerical analysis comparing the traditional RF combiner approach with the proposed joint beamforming-based distributed Massive MIMO scheme. Additionally, experiment results from a field trial demonstrate that the joint beamforming-based method significantly outperforms RF combiner approach in terms of performance metrics.
