Bio-Inspired Locomotion: Design and Control of Snail Robot

This study aims to develop a bionic snail robot that replicates the complex locomotion and high adaptability of natural snails, with the goal of exploring novel applications in robotics. Inspired by the adhesive and frictional properties of snail mucus, the mechanics is divided into fixed and dynamic regions to achieve stable, continuous movement as a behave of the gastropod. The robot is empirically built and evaluated through experiments focusing on movement behavior, mechanical design, and material response. The results confirm that the robot successfully mimics snail-like motion. Future applications include integration into mobility systems to replace traditional tires on complex surfaces, as well as enhancements to wall-climbing robots to overcome limitations related to surface material dependence.
