Design and Performance Analysis of a Metamaterial-Based Dielectric Resonator MIMO Antenna for K-Band Applications

This paper presents a metamaterial based two-port multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dielectric resonator antenna system designed to lower the mutual coupling, isolation improvement and increase gain for K band applications. The two-port MIMO antenna is constructed on a Rogers RT Duroid 5880 substrate and has dimensions of 37 × 23 × 0.8 mm³. The two elements of the MIMO structure are separated by 10 mm and are fed by microstrip lines. In the MIMO antenna, a metamaterial array consisting of three elements is placed between two radiating elements. This configuration reduces coupling and achieves a high level of isolation (39.2 dB). The antenna operates at 19.47, 20.65, 21.61, 22.91, 24.02, and 24.35 GHz. It offers a potential bandwidth of 1.97 GHz, ranging from 20.48 to 22.45 GHz. At 24.35 GHz, the gain increases from 4.12 to 9.06 dB, while the efficiency improves from 80.7% to 91.9%. The designed system features a compact form factor with excellent isolation, an envelope correlation coefficient below 0.0001, and a substantial diversity gain greater than 9.99 dB.
