Portable Green Energy-Powered GPS Tracker Using GSM Network for Hikers and Survivalists

Exploring the Malaysian jungle poses unique risks due to its dense terrain and limited infrastructure. Hikers and survivalists often find themselves without reliable means of communication or location sharing in case of emergencies. Although GPS can detect a user’s location, it is not sufficient if the data cannot be transmitted to rescuers. This paper aims to develop a green energy-powered tracking device that enables off-grid communication and location sharing, specifically designed for jungle explorers. The main objectives of this project are to design a portable device powered by green energy using Arduino, to integrate a GPS tracker using the U-Blox NEO-6M module, and to implement GSM-based communication via the 2G cellular network. The device integrates a GPS module for positioning and a GSM 2G module to transmit coordinates to a dispatcher, addressing the lack of internet coverage in remote areas. An emergency button is also included to allow users to send distress signals instantly when needed. It is powered by both solar and hydropower systems, ensuring functionality in environments with no access to electrical outlets. The system is built on the Arduino Mega 2560 platform, with programmed intervals for automatic location sharing. Although the prototype is still under testing, initial results indicate its potential to aid in faster search and rescue missions. In conclusion, the proposed device not only supports emergency response efforts and improves user safety in remote jungles, but also promotes environmental sustainability through the use of renewable energy sources.
