Enhancing IoT Knowledge and Skills in Secondary School Students Through Hands-on Learning: A University-Led CSR Initiative

This study examines the impact of hands-on learning on enhancing Internet of Things (IoT) knowledge and skills among secondary school students, framed within a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The study, collectively organized by Asia Pacific University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, targeted Form 3 and Form 4 secondary school students from SMK Jalan Empat Malaysia. Approximately 25 students participated in hands-on workshops conducted by trained educators. The sessions featured interactive activities using microcontroller boards, sensors and actuators, allowing students to engage in coding and IoT project development. The research assesses students' IoT literacy, problem-solving skills, and teamwork capabilities before and after the workshop. Similar studies have demonstrated that early exposure to IoT significantly enhances students' critical thinking and collaboration skills. The study mainly uses a quantitative methodology, using a set of survey questionnaires to get respondents' feedback. Data was also gathered through observation and a final competitive project assessment. The findings indicated that $\mathbf{8 0 \%}$ of the students firmly grasped the IoT concepts, with more than 60 % consistently applying their knowledge to develop functional projects. The results significantly improved students' understanding of IoT concepts and their ability to apply technical skills. Overall, the study reflects the importance of teaching IoT concepts to young students today, highlighting the role of educational CSR initiatives in preparing students for the evolution of future advancements.
