Wideband Circular Polarized Microstrip Antenna for UWB Application

This paper presents a slotted and truncated circular microstrip patch antenna with defective ground. The CP is achieved by introducing unequal truncations on either side of the circular patch which creates asymmetry in the overall structure of the antenna. Circular slots are introduced on the microstrip patch and the defected ground plane consists of a partial ground with triangular cuts on both sides and a rectangular slit at the centre on the upper edge of the ground plane. The proposed antenna exhibits an Impedance Bandwidth (IBW) of 7.39 GHz almost covering the UWB (Ultra-Wideband) frequency band from 3.32 GHz to 10.71 GHz. A peak gain of 11.97 dBi at a resonating frequency of 4.06 GHz and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of 5.33 GHz is achieved. This paper shows how the variation in radius of circular slots on the radiating patch and the variation in depth of rectangular slit on the ground plane effects the return loss of the proposed antenna.
