Four-Legged Robot Deployment at Offshore Platform – Opportunity and Challenges

Integrating robotics in various industries has revolutionized operations, enhancing efficiency, safety, and precision. In the offshore sector, deploying four-legged robots presents a pioneering solution for navigating challenging environments, such as oil and gas platforms. Equipped with advanced sensors, these robots conduct detailed inspections, contributing to maintenance and safety protocols. For instance, integrating LiDAR into robots enhances their spatial awareness, enabling autonomous navigation, obstacle detection, and mapping. This integration spans wheeled, legged, aerial, and static robots, shaping the future of robotics across industries. Thus, this paper reviews the challenges of LiDAR deployment across various robot types in diverse environments. Real-World applications showcase their effectiveness in the oil and gas sector, maritime operations, and environmental monitoring. Despite the opportunities, challenges arise, including unmatched data between cameras and LiDAR sensors, human movement tracking limitations, sunlight-induced noise, unreachable measurement points, uneven stair climbing, and the absence of rails. Addressing these challenges is crucial for successfully deploying four-legged robots in an offshore environment.
