Achieving End-to-End Low Latency Service Across Wireless and Wireline Networks

This paper presents a framework for achieving endto-end low latency service for paths that include both cellular wireless and wireline networks. The proposed design uses network slicing in the cellular network and Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6) in the wireline network to create an end-to-end pipe in which low latency flows are protected from the effect of delay-inducing non-low latency traffic. Within the pipe, we use the Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput (L4S) architecture, including scalable congestion control, accurate ECN, and active queue management, to maintain extremely low latency. We evaluate our approach in a proof-of-concept implementation on the POWDER testbed using OpenAirInterface and FlexRIC, L4S, and SRv6, and we make our experiment artifacts publicly available for others to validate and build on this work.
