Case Study in Leveraging Existing Standards: Knowledge Elicitation Through External Tools and Integration with the System Model

Engineering standards, both commercial and military, provide vast knowledge that can shape system requirements, procedures, and performance measures. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and broader digital transformation efforts rely on system models that ensure coherent, interoperable technical data across engineering disciplines. However, fully integrating standards into system models remains challenging because tools often lack comprehensive pre-installed standards, requirements are distributed as PDFs, and existing requirements interchange formats (ReqIF, RIF) are rarely used to publish standards. This paper presents and validates a methodology that automates extracting requirements, test methods, and performance measures from standards, transforming them into structured data, and integrating them into system modeling tools such as Cameo Enterprise Architecture. Python scripts handle text mining and data preprocessing, while Excel organizes extracted content, ensuring traceability and reusable components. This implementation demonstrates reduced redundancy, enhanced coherence, and minimized errors, thus furthering the promise of digital engineering paradigm.
