Development of a Location-Aware Home Automation System Using GPS and IoT Technologies

The advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has accelerated the growth of smart home systems, yet high costs remain a significant barrier to widespread adoption. Many existing solutions require manual intervention or fixed schedules, often overlooking real-time changes in user behavior or location, leading to energy inefficiencies and security gaps. This paper presents a low-cost, location-aware home automation system that integrates GPS-based intelligence with relay control and a user-friendly Android application. Designed for a single-storey residence and operated via smartphone with Wi-Fi connectivity, the system automates appliances and electronic door locks within a 1 km radius based on user proximity. Real-time energy usage insights are provided through current and voltage sensors, while critical thresholds trigger mobile alerts via the Blynk IoT platform. Experimental validation shows over 90% accuracy in location-based activation and a 12 % reduction in energy consumption under test conditions. The system offers a practical and affordable alternative to commercial solutions, though its dependence on outdoor GPS signals and single-user design suggest areas for future improvement.
