A Cyberattack to Cause Sub-synchronous Oscillation Target the Series Capacitor Compensator

Sub-synchronous oscillation (SSO) is a serious operation problem due to the integration of wind power into the power grid. Traditionally, the SSO is caused by system faults. However, as information infrastructure is increasingly deployed, cyberattacks are being introduced to cause unpredictable incidents. Therefore, in this paper, from a new perspective, we propose an attack to induce SSO. Considering the scenario of the grid-connected Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) with the wind turbine, the control command of the injected capacitor by the series compensation capacitor is maliciously modified to cause SSO by the attacker. The modified capacitor is computed by deriving the relationship between the oscillation eigenvalues and the capacitive reactance. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the impact of the attack.
