Cost-Weight Analysis of Transformers with Different K-Factor Values: A Comparative Study

In electrical engineering, the $\mathrm{K}$ factor in transformers refers to a rating that quantifies the load a transformer can safely handle when supplying non-linear loads, such as those generated by computers, LED lighting, and variable frequency drives. Non-linear loads produce harmonic currents, which can cause overheating and other issues in transformers. This paper delves into the comparative analysis of prices and weights concerning different $\mathrm{k}$-factor values in the transformer, specifically focusing on $\mathrm{k}$-factor values of 1, 4, 13, and 20. The $\mathrm{k}$ factor represents the ability of a transformer to handle non-linear loads, with higher values indicating better suitability for such applications. Understanding the relationship between k -factor values and transformer prices is crucial for both customers and power system designers in making informed decisions. This study will help the transformer designers to compare the price and weight of the transformer with different K-factors.
