Motivations for Adopting Edge Cloud Computing in New Zealand

With the rapid advance of digital transformation in various sectors, edge cloud computing has surfaced as a strategic remedy to meet the requirements for real-time data processing, minimal latency, and improved data security. This study investigates the motivations for IT professionals' adoption of edge cloud computing in New Zealand, aiming to identify the primary drivers and barriers affecting this transition. Qualitative study methodology was used, along with semi-structured interviews, to collect data from the IT professional participants involved in edge computing projects. Results obtained from this study indicate that the key incentives for adopting edge cloud computing are increasing operational efficiency, reducing cost, lowering latency, improving data control, and considering environmental considerations. Participants indicate that edge cloud computing helps to improve scalability and flexibility, promoting creativity and responsiveness in fast-paced digital contexts. However, the study identifies various challenges enterprises must overcome when considering edge computing, such as processing limitations, configuration complexity, and skills shortages. The study contributes to the increasing body of information on edge cloud computing adoption by giving insights into the elements that influence IT professionals' decisions. The study's outcomes can help enterprises align their cloud strategy with emerging trends and drive future studies into the impact of edge computing on IT infrastructure and digital innovation.
