Design and Analysis of an L-Slot Microstrip Patch Antenna for Breast Tumor Detection

This research paper presents an L-slotted microstrip patch antenna design operating at a frequency of 7.33 GHz for the application of detecting breast tumor, with Roger-RT/5870 (loss free) as the substrate. The proposed antenna's unique design offers the desired properties needed for such application. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software was utilized for designing and simulating this antenna. The Roger-RT/5870 substrate has dimensions 62.475 mm x 39.68 mm x 1.57 mm and the patch and the ground plane were created using copper conductors. The antenna's reflection coefficient is −31.2 dB at 7.33 GHz, with a radiation efficiency of 95.45% and antenna gain of 7.64 dBi. A three-layer breast phantom as well as a tumor was created in the 3D simulated environment to assess the antenna's tumor locating ability. Results were analyzed by keeping the antenna to breast separation at 10.17 mm to identify the antenna's performance with precision. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed antenna exhibits excellent performance in terms of efficiency, gain, and tumor detection capability. These findings highlight its potential suitability for breast tumor detection applications.
