Automated Accessioning and Archiving Using Enhanced Gantry Robot for Diagnostics Laboratory

This paper presents the development of an enhanced gantry robot for test tube handling in diagnostic laboratories. The Gantry Robot's mechanical structure is enhanced using CoreXY mechanism as compared to conventional Cartesian robots. The development of the platform comprises a depth camera, a YOLOv8 model for object detection, and a Graphical User Interface integrated with the Laboratory Information System (LIS) towards a deployable system. It enables automation of the archiving and accessioning process by ensuring test tube sorting, barcode scanning, and database updates, thereby improving workflow efficiency in terms of errors and time for laboratories. As this is provided as a platform, it also offers scope for developing further applications.
