Holistic approach for 100% converter-based offgrid hydrogen plant with propietary converter control

Green hydrogen is proving to be a key element in the quest for a sustainable and resilient energy future. The production of large quantities of green hydrogen requires the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in remote locations, which face the challenges of converter-dominated grids with many volatile sources, wide distribution and low inertia. To balance primary energy fluctuations and ensure transient and sub-transient voltage and frequency stability, battery-energy-storage systems need to be integrated but implemented as small as possible to optimize costs. The converter control within the systems is a significant risk factor, the investigation of which for all possible scenarios is a major task in any upcoming project of this type. Risk minimization is achieved by using a proprietary converter control, including grid-forming and voltage-forcing capabilities, which can be integrated into any system in the grid to be installed, regardless of the manufacturer. This is achieved by defining a standard interface for converter applications, which enables the converters to be connected to standardized control systems. Within this paper a holistic process approach and demonstrative examples for different introduced challenges are given.
