Derisking and system stability through consistent automated conformity assessment for software-based, HIL and operational testing

The characteristics of modern grids are evolving from grids with high inertia to grids dominated by power electronic systems. Challenges arise from the very high number of systems overall, pulse-pattern generation and resonances, the fluctuating availability of primary energy and the additional need for systems to transfer energy from the primary energy sources to the active power demand, e.g. through HVDC. Since power electronic systems have significantly different characteristics compared to conventional synchronous generators or loads, additional risk mitigation measures are required to ensure stable and reliable grid operation. Due to the low time constants in power electronic systems, which are dominated by the converter control, the control plays a special role in the risk assessment, as it must function for all potential scenarios, e.g. changes in the grid configuration or the availability of systems. A consistent and continuous conformity assessment in all project phases in which the control system is used in different ways is key. Within this paper, relevant details of a pilot-preparation project are presented.
