A Novel Bipolar Pulse Generator Based on the Pulse-Forming Line

The high-voltage nanosecond pulse generator is an efficient excitation source, which is very important in the application field of pulsed power technology. This article proposes a novel nanosecond bipolar pulse generator based on the pulse-forming line (PFL). The energy stored in the transmission line is released by switches with a fast switching speed to form a nanosecond pulse. In addition, high-voltage output can be generated by using a multistage PFLs superposition structure. A six-stage bipolar circuit is constructed for experimental validation. Experimental results show that the single PFL circuit can output $0\sim 500$ -V pulse voltage with a pulsewidth of 35 ns, and the pulse polarity can be adjusted. The six-stage circuit can output pulse voltage with an amplitude of 2.4 kV and a pulsewidth of 45 ns. It can stably operate at a repetition frequency of 100 kHz for a unipolar pulse and 50 kHz for a bipolar pulse.
