Use of Circular Economy Principles for Waste Segregation – Case of Chettipedu Junction

Effective waste management is vital for creating a sustainable society in India. In Chettipedu, a peri-urban area in Chennai, rapid urbanization and industrial growth have led to inefficient waste disposal, with heavy reliance on landfilling and incineration. Circular economy principles offer solutions by promoting waste reduction, efficient waste segregation, resource recovery, and reuse. Despite the increasing challenges of waste management, effective waste management solutions remain limited. The methodology adopted includes selecting a 400 m stretch of street and identifying the problems through a stakeholder survey, literature review, defining the problem, ideating solutions, and identifying the best possible solution through design thinking. This study offers solutions and strategies for waste management systems in urban streets. The concept was demonstrated as a practical product that can be adopted and implemented on any urban street.
