The Application of the Finite Element Method in the Design of the Automobile Axle Housing

Axle housing for the drive is the part containing the main power transmission, differential, and axle shaft. In addition, the axle housing also performs the function of the beam to support the rear weight of the vehicle and bear loads from wheel-road interactions. Therefore, the structure of the axle housing must ensure durability and especially rigidity so as not to affect the working condition of the internal components. If the axle housing is deformed excessively, the mounting position of the bearings is misaligned, and the axle shaft is bent. This increases the noise of the driveshaft housing and reduces the life of the components involved. When the axle housing's inherent frequency and its torsional oscillation frequency are in phase, resonance and structural harm are potential effects. This paper presents the analysis of the axle housing when using different materials using ANSYS software. The calculations can be used as the basis for the design of the truck's axle housing. These findings encourage the use of alternative materials for the axle housing in automobile powertrains.
