Design of VLC Link using Experimentally Evaluated FSO Parameters and Low-Cost Devices

We have used practically measured parameters of a Free space optics (FSO) for communication in an office room size (3.5×3.0×2.70) m³. The transmitter was selected as per the illuminance requirement calculated by the standard lumen method. The low-cost devices, comprising a Cosmos white LED lamp of the highest efficacy and a UNI-T UT-383 lux meter, were selected as the transmitter and receiver, respectively. We have used the FSO practical specification, including attenuation, Full width half maximum (FWHM) and beam divergence as -8.5612 dB/m, 1.40 m and 1.1405 radians, respectively. Furthermore, we measure the illuminance and received power distributions at different heights between the transmitter and receiver using experimental and MATLAB simulation software. The illuminance was measured at heights between 2.08 m and 2.58 m, while the received power was measured at heights between 1.09 m and 2.32 m. The illuminance and received power evaluated by two methods (experimental and MATLAB simulation) match closely and deviate within the range of 2.3% to 6.5% and 0.13% to 0.29%, respectively. In addition, we have designed a Visible Light Communication (VLC) link using practically measured Free- Space Optics (FSO) parameters, which support a maximum link distance of 1.4 m at a data rate of 70 Mbps. Performance parameters, like Quality factor (QF) and Log of Bit-error-rate (BER), are evaluated as 6.70 and -65.04, respectively.
