Innovative Short-Sea Shipping Logistics

Ports play a crucial role in global trade, handling approximately 74% of imports and exports and 37% of internal exchanges in Europe. Despite its significance, Short Sea Shipping (SSS) remains underutilized in comparison to Deep Sea Shipping (DSS), leading to inefficiencies in the European container supply chain. The MOSES project, funded under the Horizon 2020 Work Programme, aims to enhance the integration of SSS through automation, digitalization, and Physical Internet (PI) principles. By developing innovative solutions such as automated docking, intelligent container handling, and optimized logistics operations, MOSES seeks to improve operational efficiency, reduce the environmental footprint, and facilitate smart port development. This paper presents the key technological advancements of MOSES and their potential impact on maritime logistics, demonstrating how these innovations contribute to a more resilient, cost-effective, and sustainable shipping network.
