Artificial Intelligence based Control of Shunt Active Power Filters – A Survey on Recent Developments

With the growing reliance on loads involving power converters, from the power quality perspective, current harmonics have become a serious concern for consumers and utilities. Shunt active power filters (SAPFs) can be deployed to effectively mitigate harmonic current issues. However, the control of these SAPFs using traditional methods either offers sluggish dynamic response or suffers performance degradation under non-ideal operating conditions. As an alternative, artificial intelligence (AI) based control algorithms for the control of SAPF are explored by various researchers. This paper surveys the works, published from 2015 onwards, that focus on the application of AI for the control of SAPFs. A detailed overview is also provided on the use of AI-based algorithms as a replacement to traditional PI controllers and for reference current generation. This survey aims to guide researchers to solve the gaps presented by the existing AI-based control algorithms.
