A Modified Bridgeless SEPIC Assisted Improved Power Quality EV Charger

In this study, we propose a novel modified bridgeless (BL) single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC)-assisted electric vehicle (EV) charger. This innovative charger offers a cost-effective EV charging option with a high power density. By using fewer devices during a switching cycle, the charger’s efficiency is significantly increased, reducing the additional conduction loss that a typical charger's diode bridge rectifier would experience. The use of a flyback converter to synchronize the commands for charging batteries during periods of constant voltage and constant current is another unique feature of our design. The proposed charger draws a sinusoidal current from the AC mains in order to bring the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the supply current down to the permitted limits specified in IEC 61000-3-2 specifications. With low reverse recovery losses in circuit diodes and the desirable inherent zero current switching operation, the proposed charger is constructed in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). We use the MATLAB/Simulation platform to assess the enhanced performance of the modified BL SEPIC EV charger, which is both efficient and cost-effective.
