Simulation of Attacks Against Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

The security of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is crucial in ever-evolving networks because of its inherent vulnerabilities and, as a result, the possibility to disrupt network services, redirect traffic, or even intercept sensitive data. These possibilities can be realised through known attacks such as the rogue DHCP server, starvation attack. This paper focuses on reviewing and simulating possible attacks against Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol in controlled environments utilising publicly accessible tools and crafted scripts.The novelty of this study lies in the simulation of previously proposed but untested attacks on multiple DHCP services across different operating systems. The findings reveal that these services exhibit varying behaviours, with some proving resistant to the attacks, challenging prior assumptions about their vulnerability.Our findings provide valuable insights to network administrators and stakeholders about vulnerabilities in their network infrastructure and can help subsequently develop efficient mitigation strategies.
