Service-Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics by Integrating DDS and DoIP

This study proposes a novel architecture that combines Data Distribution Service (DDS) and Diagnosis over IP (DoIP) to realize a service-based diagnostic system in a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) environment. In existing vehicle diagnostic systems, controller diagnosis is only possible through physical access (CAN, LIN, FlexRay). Still, the proposed system is designed to enable remote diagnosis by combining the publisher-subscriber model of DDS with the DoIP protocol. The experimental environment utilized two NXP S32G boards, one as a DDS publisher (sending diagnostic data) and the other as a DDS subscriber (receiving diagnostic data) validated the DoIP packets in real time using CANoe tools. In particular, DoIP message transmission using the multicast method confirmed that efficient data delivery is possible even in zonal architecture, the future vehicle architecture. This study demonstrated the technical feasibility of providing diagnostic services without a physical connection, which has the potential to be extended to over-the-air (OTA) updates, predictive maintenance, and edge computing-based diagnostic systems in the future.
