Fuzzy Logic Based Zero Trust Architecture for Security of AMI in Smart Grids

The transition from traditional power grids to smart grids (SG) has enhanced the efficiency and sustainability of electricity delivery but has also introduced significant cybersecurity challenges, particularly within the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) ecosystem. AMI, which collects, transmits, and analyzes energy data across a network of users and devices, is vulnerable to unauthorized access and data breaches, posing risks such as energy theft and service disruptions due to its distributed and interconnected nature. This paper proposes a novel trust score based Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) utilizing fuzzy logic to secure AMI. The model employs a flexible security framework that evaluates trust scores based on multiple factors, including user activity, device details, and access timing. Access is granted only if both the overall trust score and specific individual scores meet predefined thresholds, ensuring that unauthorized attempts are blocked even if some factors appear legitimate. Simulation results demonstrate the model’s effectiveness in preventing unauthorized access and safeguarding data. This fuzzy logic-based ZTA offers a dynamic and intelligent approach to securing smart grid networks against evolving cyber threats, ensuring their resilience as they continue to develop.
