Enhancing University Research Portals Through the Application of Knowledge Management Principles

Digital transformation has become essential across various sectors, including the academia. As university research processes increasingly shift to online platforms, the need for an efficient and accessible digital research portal becomes evident. This paper aimed to design and develop a university-based digital research portal using the knowledge management principles, ensuring seamless access to institution-wide research outputs anytime and anywhere. The software tool was developed using object-oriented analysis and design, following a unified process approach and deployed as a web-based platform. The results demonstrated the effective application of the knowledge management principles in three key areas. First, the integration of a research management system streamlined the capture, organization, and centralization of faculty and student research outputs of the university, facilitating accessibility and collaboration. Second, the inclusion of an open-access portal improved the dissemination and searchability of research outputs, benefiting the university’s academic community. Lastly, the system introduced value-added features, such as automated tracking of manuscript submissions, real-time status monitoring, and involvement of key research stakeholders—including research advisers, grammarians, and statisticians—in the review and approval process. Additionally, the portal provided analytical insights, generating reports on the most-viewed research articles and those with the highest number of submissions. By implementing this digital research portal, the project enhances knowledge sharing, research collaboration, and efficiency in university research processes, contributing to a more dynamic and interconnected academic environment.
