18-40 GHz Low-Profile Tightly Coupled Dipole Array with Improved Integrated Feeding Technique

This paper presents a low-profile wideband wide-angle scanning tightly coupled dipole array (TCDA) operating from 18 to 40 GHz. The element is fed by a straightforward coaxial-to-microstrip transition, which requires no additional impedance transformation structure and facilitates miniaturization. Shorting vias and E-plane metal patches are introduced to expand the bandwidth. In addition, a wide angle impedance matching layer composed of dielectric substrate is added above the dipoles. The simulation results indicate that the TCDA can scan up to 60° in the E-plane and 45° in the H-plane at 18-40 GHz.
