Design of mems-based drug pump for targeted drug delivery using COMSOL Multiphysics

Implantable intrathecal drug delivery systems are currently used for relieving pain. The proposed system consists of a micropump for the administration of painkillers into the spinal cord. A MEMS-based targeted drug deli very structure will require an in-plane silicon pump and associated circuitry for local and centralized delivery of therapeutic agents for pain relief. The micropump is simulated in COMSOL Mul tiphysics using a time-dependent fluid flow interaction structure. The process of design of the micropump incorporates various modules of physics to model and to interpret the intricate interactions between the dynamics of the fluid and structural mechanics. The laminar flow characteristics and materials to the micropump are added. The amount of liquid pumped at a unit time is calculated by using the Global Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs). As the time increases, an increasing flow rate is observed from the inlet to the outlet. A positive flow rate indication is recorded and analysed. Convergence plots for parameters like pressure, fluid flow, Global ODEs and DAEs, spatial mesh displacement are obtained and evaluated. This modelling estimates the impacts of the design parameters such as chamber geometry, actuator mechanism, and flow pathway on pump efficiency and flow rate.
