Communication Protocols for EV using MATLAB Simulink & Python

Electric vehicles are transforming our existing transportation systems by increasing efficiency and meeting sustainability goals. However, the integration of Electric Vehicles into the power grid requires a reliable communication channel with low latency between the EV subsystems, and grid infrastructure. These traditional testing approaches are usually hardware dependent or at best limited to component level simulations, which limits the flexibility and repeatability of a system. This paper presents a communication framework that is software based and that integrates MATLAB Simulink to model the EV circuit components, Python Flask APIs to establish communication and MATLAB App Designer based graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor and control the system interactively. This framework allows us end to end simulation of both physical and communication layers, which provides a cost-effective and extensible platform for EV to Grid communication. Our simulation results also confirm the functional feasibility of the proposed architecture of smooth communication between grid and vehicle with dynamic system response and real-time data monitoring in a stable manner with no requirement of any physical hardware.
